The Enviroment:
High above the valley of Merano – nestling against the sundrenched southern slopes of the mighty Dolomites and commanding spectacular sweeping views over one of Europe’s most enchanting landscapes: this is Castel Fragsburg, a fine 17th century Hunting Retreat of noble origins, now the smallest luxury hotel in the region.
Castel Fragsburg is privately owned since 1955 by the Ortner family, who continue to give the hotel remarkable character reflecting the unspoilt, vast landscape of the Dolomites and the vineyards and orchards of South Tyrol; as a member of Relais & Châteaux the Castle Fragsburg follows the philosophy ‘a unique home for a unique stay’ and is part of their ‘collection of the world’s finest restaurants and hotels’.
The first impression is breathtaking: the arrival at Castel Fragsburg is a unique experience amid pure, unspoilt nature. High above the South Tyrolean spa town of Merano the hunting lodge, dating back to the year 1620, is situated amongst orchards and vineyards.
A romantic panoramic street leads up to the smallest luxury hotel of the region – perched against the south facing Dolomites – high above the valley – and offers one of the most spectacular panoramas imaginable – a small private world for unforgettable moments. A place of calm to relax and recuperate.
Being Responsible
The hunting lodge was built in 1620 by the Earl of Mämmingen, it has changed proprietors several times over the last centuries and is owned by the Ortner family since 1954.
The hotel has been renovated from time to time, without changing the outer facade. The original style has been preserved over the years and the 20 rooms and suites are decorated with antique furniture and wood panelling. Within the framework of the most recent renovation in 2008, Castel Fragsburg has acquired much higher comfort and luxury.
Today the hotel is managed by proprietor Alexander Ortner, as a member of “Relais & Chateaux”; the Castle Fragsburg follows the philosophy 'a unique home for a unique stay' and is part of the 'collection of world’s finest restaurants and hotels'.
How you will reside
With only 20 rooms and suites the Relais & Châteaux Castel Fragsburg is a hideaway destination, cherished by those seeking privacy and relaxation, exemplary hospitality and a refined atmosphere. Selected antiques and fine materials define the style in the individual rooms and suites with balconies and winter garden. Be inspired by the picturesque views over the Dolomites, orchards and vineyards at the South Tyrolean ‘wine road’.
How you will eat
The restaurant of the Castel Fragburg perches like an eagles nest on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the valley of Merano and aking in the spectacle of the Dolomites. Michelin has awarded a star in December 2009, thereby endorsing accolades from Gault Millau and Veronelli. The cuisine at the Fragsburg combines traditional South Tyrolean cooking with Mediterranean lightness, delivering highest level culinary culture. Head Chef Luis Haller’s authentic creations are aptly supported by a remarkable wine list with 170 bins, mostly from indigenous top growers, with selected Italian and international wines. Service is immaculate and discreet, culminating in a unique style of hospitality which is the rtrade mark of Castel Fragsburg.
Subject to fine weather this culinary highlight can be enjoyed from the glass veranda, whilst enjoying the Etsch-Valley or the lights of the Meranvalley by night. Luciano Pavarotti and Ben Kingsley are just two of the many personalities who have visited the Castel Fragsburg.
